Upgrade Linux Kernel 4.0 Stable / Kernel 4.0 ubuntu 14.10 Utopic Unicorn, Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr (LTS) / Kernel 4.0 Linux Mint 17.1 Rebecca, Linux Mint 17 Qiana

Linux kernel is the essential part of any Linux operating system. It is responsible for resource allocation, low-level hardware interfaces, security, simple communications, basic file system management, and more. Written from scratch by Linus Torvalds (with help from various developers), Linux is a clone of the UNIX operating system. It is geared towards POSIX and Single UNIX Specification compliances.

MATE Desktop 1.10.0 Released, Install on ubuntu 14.10 Utopic Unicorn, Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr (LTS) and Linux Mint 17.1 Rebecca, Linux Mint 17 Qiana

Install MATE Desktop 1.10.0 on ubuntu 14.10 Utopic Unicorn, Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr (LTS) and Linux Mint 17.1 Rebecca, Linux Mint 17 Qiana

MATE is an open source desktop environment, a fork of the GNOME 2 window manager, specifically designed to be used by Linux OS developers who want to create lightweight, yet usable distributions that run on low-end computers.

Similar to GNOME Classic

Just like the GNOME desktop environment, MATE is comprised of several independent packages, which means that users can install the base and then add as many packages as they want.

Default applications

When taking a peek inside the desktop environment, we can immediately notice the Caja file manager forked from Nautilus, Pluma text editor forked from Gedit, Eye of MATE image viewer forked from Eye of GNOME, and Atril document viewer forked from Evince.

Additionally, the Engrampa compression utility is a fork of File Roller, the terminal emulator app is called MATE Terminal and it’s a fork of GNOME Terminal, and the Marco window manager has been forked from Metacity.

What's new in MATE 1.10.0:
  • Turn MateRRScreen, GnomeRRConfig and GnomeOutputInfo into a GObject. Thanks to monsta for helping to test this.
  • Add gobject introspection
  • Many RANDR fixes
  • interface: add automatic-mnemonics key for Gtk xsetting
  • use GDK_WINDOW_XID for inter-GTK compatibility
  • Updated mpaste for website change
  • Added org.mate.debug GSettings schema
  • Added MateColorButton class to have traditional color selection dialog with GTK3
  • Removed desktop-docs
  • Removed user guide
  • Removed libunique optional dependency
  • Added MateAboutDialog class to have traditional about dialog with GTK3 too

How to install Mate 1.10.0 on Ubuntu 14.10 systems:

Install Kadu 2.1 on Ubuntu / Linux Mint via PPA

Tag : Kadu 2.1 ubuntu 14.04 PPA / Kadu 2.1 ubuntu 14.10 / Kadu 2.1 ubuntu 15.04 / Kadu 2.1 Linux Mint 17.1 Rebecca / Kadu 2.1 Linux Mint 17 Qiana

Kadu is an open source graphical software that provides users with a multi-protocol instant messaging solution for the Gadu-Gadu protocol. It supports GNU/Linux and Microsoft Windows operating systems.

The application is fully functional, good-looking and fully compatible with the widely used Jabber/XMPP protocol. It offers a familiar, user-friendly, easy to use and flexible graphical interface.

Features at a glance

Among some of its major features, we can mention message encryption, file transfer support, graphical messages, emoticons, support for numerous plugins, easy and comprehensive configuration, as well as bot, annoyers and spammers protection.

However, its power consists of the numerous standard plugins maintained by the Kadu developers, as well as external add-ons created and maintained by users. They add support for SMS, MPD media players, Growl notifications, and much more.

Whether you want to encrypt your conversations, add sound support from external applications, set auto away messages, add custom notifications, add support for FALF media players, protect yourself against unwanted chats, or store chat history, you need a plugin.

What's new in Kadu 2.1:
  • Unity integration
    • Integration with Unity – windowing system used in Ubuntu – has been greatly improved. Problematic docking plugins are disabled when Kadu detects that Unity is running. Instead indicator_docking is loaded and Kadu adds itself to messaging menu in top-right corner of the screen.
    • Also new plugin, unity_integration, was created. It displays number of unread messages on Kadu icon in Unity launcher panel.
  • Sound improvements
    • Most of sound issues were fixed. In Kadu 2 qt4_sound plugin was removed. It is now enough to load sound plugin. It is still possible to use external application with use of ext_sound or Phonon sound system with use of phonon_sound plugin.
  • Chat window
    • New configuration options allows to open new chat window in minimized state when message was received.
    • New item in context menu of chat window allows to immediately send clipboard content.

Nvidia Linux Display Driver 346.59

Nvidia Linux Display Driver is a proprietary OpenGL video driver that tries to bring support for the graphics cards produced by Nvidia on Linux-based operating systems. This version supports only the 32-bit architecture. For 64-bit support, see this link. Even if it provides a settings panel, the Nvidia Linux Display Driver is not an application. It is a hardware driver, which provides some instructions that tell an operating system how to use a piece of hardware.

What's new in Nvidia Linux Display Driver 32-bit 346.59:
Added support for the following GPUs:
  • Quadro K1200
  • Quadro M6000
  • GeForce 920M
  • GeForce 930A
  • GeForce 930M
  • GeForce 940M
  • GeForce GTX 950M
  • GeForce GTX 960M
  • GeForce GTX TITAN X
  • Fixed a bug that caused corruption when switching display modes in some applications that use transform feedback.
  • Fixed a bug that caused texture corruption on framebuffer depth attachments cleared using glClearTexImage().
  • Fixed a bug that artificially limited the maximum pixel clock on displays in some SLI Mosaic configurations.
  • Fixed a kernel memory leak that occurred when looping hardware-accelerated video decoding with VDPAU on Maxell-based GPUs.
Supports a wide range of Nvidia GPUs

In our tests, we’ve discovered that the Nvidia Linux Display Driver supports much more Nvidia graphics cards than the open source Nouveau driver. It plays well with most of the ION, ION LE, Quadro Plex, Quadro Sync, GRID, NVS, nForce Professional 3000, Quadro FX, Quadro Blade, as well as all the GeForce series.

All in all, if you have a PC or laptop equipped with an Nvidia GPU, and you have issues with the default Nouveau open source driver, you may want to install the Nvidia Linux Display Driver. It’s also the number one choice for gaming users.
