Tor Browser Bundle 4.0.2 is out, install on Linux Mint 17.1 Rebecca and Ubuntu 15.04 vivid Vervet, ubuntu 14.10 Utopic Unicorn, Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr (LTS)

Tor Browser Bundle 4.0.2 is out, install on Ubuntu 15.04 vivid Vervet, ubuntu 14.10 Utopic Unicorn, Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr (LTS), Ubuntu 13.10/13.04/2.04, Linux Mint 17.1 Rebecca, Linux Mint 17 Qiana, Linux Mint 13 Maya, Pinguy OS 14.04, Elementary OS 0.3 Freya, Elementary OS 0.2 Luna, Peppermint Five, Deepin 2014, LXLE 14.04, Linux Lite 2.0, Linux Lite 2.2 and other Ubuntu derivative systems via PPA

The Tor software protects you by bouncing your communications around a distributed network of relays run by volunteers all around the world: it prevents somebody watching your Internet connection from learning what sites you visit, it prevents the sites you visit from learning your physical location, and it lets you access sites which are blocked.

The Tor Browser lets you use Tor on Windows, Mac OS X, or Linux without needing to install any software. It can run off a USB flash drive, comes with a pre-configured web browser to protect your anonymity, and is self-contained.

What's New in This Release:
  • Update Firefox to 31.3.0esr
  • Update NoScript to 2.6.9.5
  • Update HTTPS Everywhere to 4.0.2
  • Update Torbutton to 1.7.0.2

Opera 26 for Linux shows great promise

All the Opera versions are now the same, no matter the platform used. That means that users will get the same kind of features on Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux, which is not a small feat. Getting parity in apps, across platforms, is a very difficult thing to achieve even if the application uses the same Chromium base.

Opera 26 brings a feature that users won't find anywhere else, and that is the ability to share the bookmarks with other people. This might not sound like much, but it's actually quite useful and it's a great addition. In fact, Opera has been responsible for bringing numerous features that were actually adopted later by Firefox and Chrome, so their role of innovators is very well known.

To Install/Update Opera 26.0 on Ubuntu 15.04 vivid Vervet, ubuntu 14.10 Utopic Unicorn, Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr (LTS), Ubuntu 13.10/13.04/2.04, Linux Mint 17.1 Rebecca, Linux Mint 17 Qiana, Linux Mint 13 Maya, Pinguy OS 14.04, Elementary OS 0.3 Freya, Elementary OS 0.2 Luna, Peppermint Five, Deepin 2014, LXLE 14.04, Linux Lite 2.0, Linux Lite 2.2 and other Ubuntu derivative systems, open a new Terminal window and bash (get it?) in the following commands:

Watch Movies and TV Shows for Free with Popcorn Time 0.3.5 on Linux, Mac OS X and Windows

Watch Movies and TV Shows for Free with Popcorn Time 0.3.5 on Linux, Mac OS X and Windows
 Popcorn Time 0.3.5

Watch Movies and TV Shows for Free with Popcorn Time 0.3.5 on Linux, Mac OS X and Windows

Popcorn Time
is an open source and multi-platform software project that has been designed from the ground up to provide users with a next-gen, torrent-based free video streaming application that allows anyone to easily watch their favorite movies and TV shows in style and with a minimum effort and fuss.

Features at a glance

Key features include a powerful and attractive graphical user interface that looks the same on all supported platforms, support for both 1080p and 720p movies, two different view modes (Movies and TV Series), built-in search engine, support for bookmarks, support for viewing movie trailers via YouTube, and support for subtitles.

What's New in This Release:
  • Made the updater slightly more durable
  • Fixed a bug with the updater breaking when files are missing in Linux
  • Added a button to reset the databases if you're stuck on the loading screen
  • Fixed the missing and not working Airplay bug
  • Fixed the missing and not working ChromeCast
  • Fixed the stuck at 99% while using subtitles
  • Fixed a bug with trailers in the HTTP API, issue PT-1333
  • Fixed the ghost processes left behind on mac and binding issues

First of all, let’s get the legal part out of the way. The status of Popcorn Time is a grey one, but surprisingly enough, it is not illegal everywhere. Some countries out there, like Portugal for example, have said that P2P sharing is not a crime, so applications like Popcorn Time don't break any laws.

Other countries have much stricter laws and it's possible that you might be breaking the law when using this app. Make sure you know what you are doing before starting the application.

This is using a BitTorrent engine, so all the files are downloaded from online sources. Users are not able to save the files locally, but that doesn't mean that they won't be sharing the stuff that they are watching.

This is not done in a transparent way, so unless you have something like FrostWire to check the traffic, you won't know exactly what's happening.

Popcorn Time is now even much better

The devs have been working hard to improve the application and they have made a number of changes and improvements. It's nothing major and that is reflected in the version number, which remained largely the same. This is Hotfix 3 for the 0.3.5 branch of Popcorn Time, although the version number could have easily increased.

"Hey everyone, It's time again for yet another hotfix! This one brings all kinds of goodies for those of you with ChromeCast and Airplay devices. We heard your screams, and we've answered them! As always, I hope this hotfix will resolve a lot of the issues that you guys have been having. Hotfixes are automatically downloaded and applied to your Popcorn Time! If you're having issues with it not actually updating, or getting stuck in a download loop, please re-download Popcorn Time," is noted in the announcement.

The devs have explained that the update process has been improved, a bug that was breaking the update process on Linux has been corrected, it's now possible to reset the databases when the download becomes locked, ChromeCast is now working properly, and a few smaller fixes have been implemented.

You can download the latest Popcorn Time 0.3.5 release from Softpedia. This is a binary file and it doesn't need to be installed.

QMPlay2 14.12.01 released, Available for Arch Linux, Gentoo, OpenSUSE, Windows and Mac OS X

QMPlay2 14.12.01 released, Available for Arch Linux, Gentoo, OpenSUSE, Windows and Mac OS X

QMPlay2 14.12.01 released, Available for Arch Linux, Gentoo, OpenSUSE, Windows and Mac OS X

QMPlay2 is an open source and multi-platform software project that allows you to play all sorts of video files from the comfort of your Linux, Windows or Mac desktop. It is backed by the amazing and powerful FFmpeg multimedia framework and features an integrated Wrzuta.pl and YouTube browser.

Features at a glance

Key features include support for a wide range of video and audio codecs, including MP3, AC3, AAC, FLAC, OGG, support for playing Internet streams supporting the HTTP, RTSP, RTMP, MMS, and YouTube protocols, support for a wide range of subtitles, including SRT, SUB and SSA, as well as support for playlists, which can be saved or imported.

Additionally, the application features a tabbed interface, allowing you to easily navigate between the main components, which are called widgets in the app. These include the video player, equalizer, video downloader, YouTube viewer, Internet radio, FFT Spectrum, simple visualization, playlist and information. Each one can be detached from the main window.

QMPlay2 compilation tutorial.

You need (devel packages):
- qt4 or qt5 (including QtOpenGL, OpenSSL(for https) and QtDBus on Linux/BSD)
- portaudio (default on non-Linux OS, if you want to compile portaudio module on Linux, change "src/modules/modules.pro")
- libasound (for ALSA module on Linux)
- pulseaudio (optional, if you don't want to compile pulseaudio on Linux, remove it from "src/modules/modules.pro")
- ffmpeg >= 1.2 (libavcodec, libavformat, libavutil, libswscale, libswresample or libavresample*)
- libva (vaapi) and libvdpau - only on X11
- DirectDraw SDK - only on Windows
- taglib >= 1.7 (>= 1.9 recommended) (you can disable it in "src/gui/gui.pro")
- libcdio and libcddb
- libass
- libxv
*libavresample:
Uncomment last three lines in "src/qmplay2/qmplay2.pro"

Running compilation script:
Windows (Cross-compile):
- install all required MinGW packages (I recommend ArchLinux unofficial MinGW repository),
- some libraries are incompatible, uses unneeded libraries or doesn't exists in repository - you must built them on your own,
- notice that QMPlay2 uses static linking for some libraries,
- run compile_win_cross
You can also compile it on Windows, but you must build toolchain for your own!
I'm using my own PKGBUILDs for many MinGW libraries.
Visual Studio can't compile QMPlay2.
Linux/BSD:
- if you don't want to open Xterm or Konsole - "export NOTERM=1",
- if you want to prepare *.desktop files for system use - "export SYSTEM_BUILD=1",
- if you want to compile with qt suffix (for example "qmake-qt5") - "export QT_SUFFIX=-qt5",
- run compile_unix,
- QMPlay2 is in "app" directory, you can move its contents into /usr directory if $SYSTEM_BUILD == 1

Building package RPM, DEB or any other - look at ArchLinux PKGBUILD: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages/qm/qmplay2/PKGBUILD

QMPlay2 uses the external software - "youtube-dl", so "youtube-dl" should be as optional package in package manager.

The source is available now and you can download for Arch linux, OpenSUSE, Gentoo. Binary packages are in the process of being built, and will appear soon at their respective download locations.

Install Google Chrome 39 (Stable) in Linux Mageia 5, Mageia 4, OpenMandriva Lx 2014.1, OpenMandriva Lx 2014.0

Install Google Chrome 39 (Stable) in Mageia 5, Mageia 4, OpenMandriva Lx 2014.1, OpenMandriva Lx 2014.0

Install Google Chrome 39 (Stable) in Linux Mageia 5, Mageia 4, OpenMandriva Lx 2014.1, OpenMandriva Lx 2014.0

Google Chrome is a browser that combines a minimal design with sophisticated technology to make the web faster, safer, and easier.

The biggest addition in this release is 64-bit support for OS X, which first arrived in Chrome 38 beta. Unlike on Windows where 32-bit and 64-bit versions will both continue to be available (users currently have to opt-in to use the 64-bit release), Chrome for Mac is now only available in 64-bit.

All Chrome for Mac users on the stable channel will be updated to the 64-bit version when they get Chrome 39, which doesn’t have a 32-bit equivalent. While Google hasn’t explicitly said so, this would seem that first-generation Intel Macs will not be able to move past Chrome 38.
As Google has shared before, 64-bit support brings speed and security improvements to its browser:
64-bit Chrome has become faster as a result of having access to a superior instruction set, more registers, and a more efficient function calling convention. Improved opportunities for ASLR enhance this version’s security. Another major benefit of this change comes from the fact that most programs on a modern Mac are already 64-bit apps.
In cases where Chrome was the last remaining 32-bit app, there were launch-time and memory-footprint penalties as 32-bit copies of all of the system libraries needed to be loaded to support Chrome. Now that Chrome’s a 64-bit app too, we expect you’ll find that it launches more quickly and that overall system memory use decreases.
The move also means Chrome for Mac no longer supports 32-bit Netscape Plugin Application Programming Interface (NPAPI) plugins, although their 64-bit counterparts are supported. Google is hoping to drop 32-bit NPAPI plugin support from Chrome altogether, so this should come as no surprise, in order to “improve Chrome’s security, speed, and stability as well as reduce complexity in the code base.” read more for information about google chrome 39

To install Chrome 39 Unstable on Linux Mageia 5, Mageia 4, OpenMandriva Lx 2014.1, OpenMandriva Lx 2014.0 systems, open a new Terminal window and bash (get it?) in the following commands:

sudo urpmi.addmedia --update chrome_i386 http://dl.google.com/linux/chrome/rpm/stable/i386
sudo urpmi google-chrome-stable

Instructions for 64 bit systems:

sudo rpm --import https://dl-ssl.google.com/linux/linux_signing_key.pub
sudo urpmi.addmedia --update chrome_x86_64 http://dl.google.com/linux/chrome/rpm/stable/x86_64
sudo urpmi google-chrome-stable

Optional, to remove Chrome 38 stable, from both 32 bit and 64 bit systems, open a new Terminal window and bash (get it?) in the following commands:
sudo urpme google-chrome-stable
